Demand for 150mm timber remains strong, and this product is mostly home (UK) grown. Usually known in the Trade as 6x1, or gravelboards. There is still demand from rural and domestic applications for this timber but we consider this product to be one of our agricultural products. Used in livestock housing with spacing between the vertical timbers. The idea is for the timbers to be spaced to allow warm air from the livestock to circulate with fresh air that passes through the spaced Yorkshire Boards.
To keep costs down these timbers are unseasoned rather than kiln dried. Therefore the finished thickness can vary by 2-3mm and they have a rustic appearance. Because this is a mass-market item the price is always keen making it ideally priced for cladding the sides of a larger timber shed. In this type of application any movement in the board dimensions can normally be tolerated.
These timbers are all pressure treated with Tanalith E, or a similar timber preservative. It is recommended that any cross cuts are treated with two coats of end-grain preservative treatment. In domestic installs they can be used horizontally for gravel boards on a featheredge fence. Placing the gravel board at the bottom of the fence means less water take-up by the vertical feather edge boards.
Another garden fence application would be as vertical boards in a hit and miss fence. The sawn boards can be applied to both sides of the fence rails, where required, for extra privacy.
Timbers all pressure treated with preservative
These timbers are not treated, or intended, for use in ground contact. They are pressure treated for uses where the timber may be subjected to high moisture or from rain. If however the boards are used in ground contact (a raised vegetable or flower bed) then make sure that water can drain away because this will help to increase the board’s service life. You might even consider buying some incised UC4 timbers which have extra treatment for ground contact. Whichever way these sawn timbers are used ithen please treat any cross cuts on the boards with Ronseal End Grain protector.
