125 x 125mm UC4 Collection Sawn Incised UC4 4WW Spruce Post (FSC® Mix), 2.4m,Manufacturers 15 Year Warranty*
Square Sawn Incised UC4 Posts
For some years now we have been selling UC4 incised posts with a Manufacturers 15 year service life warranty. These posts supplement our ongoing range of standard sawn posts and our planed posts.
While there are Terms & Conditions to validate the 15 Year Guarantee these are not particularly onerous and are basically little more than good practice. The long service life of these posts does incur some extra material costs for us all. However they do provide greater peace of mind for both the installer and the end user.

Incising, as the name suggests, is the process of machining many small incisions into the surface of the post to let the preservative treatment enter more freely. These posts are incised to a depth of around 10mm which is particularly important for impermeable species such as Spruce. Normally the bottom 750mm - 800mm of the post is incised to protect the area that is in contact with the ground as this is the most vulnerable area.
When it comes to cutting posts and drilling holes try to find another way around the installation. These longer life posts are effective because the Tanalith preservative treatment process forms a protective barrier. This barrier protects the treated timber against fungal and insect decay, the main causes of rot. Any cutting or machining can break this protective barrier and therefore reduce the expected service life of the product.
Cross cutting right through the product should be avoided. However, if this is not possible, the cut end should be re-applied with an end-grain preservative. We stock and supply Ronseal End Grain Protector. It is also important to apply the end-grain treatment to any drilled holes or notches on the posts. If you purchase any other product then it must specify that it is formulated for end grain, or cross grain.
When installing timber products into the ground, it is essential that water can drain away from them. This can be achieved by putting at least 150mm of gravel / ballast / loose stone into the bottom of the hole, then placing the post into the hole. Fill the post- hole with Remix (aka Postcrete, aka Post Crete) to ground level. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and ensure that the mix comes to slightly above ground-level. Use a trowel to slope the post concrete-mix so that any rainwater can drain away from the post. It is important that the base of the post does not remain wet for longer than necessary.
