We carry large stocks of sawn tanalised timber posts for fencing, timber buildings and field gates. Because we buy sawn timber in bulk we can pass cost savings on to you, our customers. More details on our sawn wooden posts below. If you require planed posts visit here and planed, chamfered deck posts here
All timber posts for external use should be pressure-treated with preservatives to protect against fungal and insect attacks. The 100mm sawn posts are a top-selling product and are stocked up to 4.8 metres long.
If the post’s service life is a key consideration then 100mm incised posts would be preferable. These incised posts receive deeper penetration of preservatives, and a Manufacturer’s 15-year Warranty. We also stock large section (125mm, 150mm, 175mm and 200mm) timber posts for field and driveway gates
Timber driveway/field gates need a 2.4 metre post for hanging. Sawn post stocks include 150mm, 175mm and 200mm square. Details on gate post sizes here
If you purchase these posts then you must register your details within 90 days of purchase to validate your Manufacturers 15 Year Service Warranty. Please go to https://www.bsw.co.uk/warranty/
While there are Terms & Conditions to validate the 15 Year Guarantee these are not particularly onerous and are basically little more than good practice.
When it comes to cutting posts and drilling holes try to find another way around the installation. These longer life posts are effective because the Tanalith preservative treatment process forms a protective barrier. This barrier protects against fungal and insect decay, the main causes of rot. Any cutting or machining can break this protective barrier and therefore reduce the expected service life of the product.
Cross cutting right through the product should be avoided. However, if this is not possible, the cut end should be re-applied with an end-grain preservative. It is also important to apply the end-grain treatment to any drilled holes or notches on the posts.
When installing timber products into the ground, it is essential that water can drain away from them. This can be achieved by putting at least 150mm of gravel / ballast / loose stone into the bottom of the hole, then placing the post into the hole, and then filling the hole with Remix (aka Postcrete, aka Post Crete) to ground level. Slope the post-mix so that the water can drain away from the post. Do not make a “boot” for a post out of concrete as this will keep the post wet for long periods.
