Firstly, these lap fence panels are made in the Welsh borders by a well-established timber mill and manufacturer. They are robust panels and made to a sturdy specification, with pressure treated panel components. Competitively priced these panels use up to 30% more materials than other Suppliers.
Lap panels are typically 45mm thick and will accept a 46mm panel clip. Weights? The 6’ x 6’ panels normally weigh in at 45kg. depending on how wet the timber is.
Our HD overlap panels use a traditional design which combines horizontal lapped 4-5mm thick slats with vertical battening – there are five 18mm x 38mm battens on one side, three on the other. (please note this includes the battens that are fixed on the panel edges) This helps to minimise flex and increase the panel’s strength by holding the overlap slats in place. These components are cut as a separate stage of the panel making process. The timber fence slats are topped with sloped capping to minimise water ingress and to provide an attractive finish to the top of the panels.
Panel manufacture for over 25 years
Our Supplier has been making panels for over 25 years – they expanded in 2023 to a 10-acre dedicated manufacturing site. These are sizeable premises for this production and they utilise a mix of machinery and human supervision. The Panelmaster machines are backed up with hand-finishing for the products quality is checked during assembly.
Raw materials are normally sourced from within the manufacturer’s other timber processing plants. Sustainability is another consideration and they have committed to solar energy, electric forklifts and biomass timber.
Pressure treatment and Tanalith preservative
Because timber components for panels are supplied as unspecified softwood, they could be spruce, douglas fir or larch. Therefore, the panel colours can initially vary from pack to pack, even sometimes within packs. This colour variation generally tones down considerably after a few weeks. There may be traces of green on some timber slats, this is quite normal and normally occurs where knots or sap in the timber have a small residue of preservative.
If the colour difference is considered too great, even for only 1 season, the sawn boards can be stained, usually shades of brown, grey or green, Because of the absorbent nature of sawn timber you would be advised to use a stain that is formulated for sawn rather than planed timber. We supply a range of suitable Ronseal product which is available in several different shades. If you want a retro-fence then we stock dark, and light, Creosote stains as well.
Extra products and fixings to extend service life
Where possible use a horizontal gravel board at the bottom of the fence to keep the panels protected from mower & strimmer damage and soil creep.
Other products from Southern Timber include: bitumen post savers; Postcrete; Ronseal end grain protector; standard sawn or 15 Year warranty posts.
Finally, other panel sizes can be made to order. However, these must normally be in minimum batch size of 30 units because of the setting up time and costs for the machines.
