Standard MDF
MDF is an engineered wood product, usually sold in 2440mm x 1220mm sheets. “Standard” MDF Board is often used for interior furniture, fittings, and trims because it is relatively easier to machine, trim, and paint than real wood or plywood.
Properties of Standard MDF
MDF Board is manufactured using sawdust or shavings of wood, dried and combined with resin and wax. This is then compressed with heat and pressure, into rigid shapes which are then cut to size and sanded.
These MDF sheets have a consistent appearance, and a smooth look without the knots and splits found in real timber. MDF fluctuates less in thickness when compared to wood or ply.
MDF sheets are easy to work with and can be used with routers to create channels and decorative edges. This can be achieved without splintering and virtually no sanding finishing required afterwards.
MDF costs are lower
These versatile MDF boards are relatively lightweight and value for money. MDF is easy to work with and Standard MDF can be used on most projects, from built in wardrobes, bespoke plate racks for a kitchen and radiator covers. If the kitchen, or bathroom, gets too humid then more specialist MDF such as MR MDF can be used.
Other MDF options
Reference has already been made to Moisture Resistant MDF and Veneered MDF. Other products that use MDF include skirting and architrave mouldings. MDF is also used for Neatmatch cladding, these 8’ x 4’ sheets are used mainly in bathroom and kitchen installations.
