MDF

MDF sheets are an engineered wood product, usually sold in 2440mm x 1220mm sheets. It is often encountered as standard MDF, Moisture Resistant MDF (MR) and Veneered MDF. This board material is traditionally used for interior furniture, fittings and trims because it is relatively easier to machine, trim and paint.

Properties of Standard MDF

MDF is manufactured using sawdust or shavings of wood, dried and combined with resin and wax. Compressed with heat and pressure, into rigid shapes which are then sanded and cut to size.

These MDF sheets have a consistent appearance, a smooth look without the knots and splits found in real timber. MDF fluctuates less in thickness when compared to wood or ply.

Moisture Resistant MDF

MR MDF is moisture resistant, not waterproof. It can be used in damp areas but not used outdoors. MDF will absorb water quite easily, which will lead to swollen and dis-coloured boards. Plywood is not immune to water damage but will hold up better over time.

Oak Veneered MDF

MDF boards are lower in price than real wood and can be covered with thin veneers of real timber to produce what appears to be solid wood. It is also far quicker to stain and colour than natural wood

MDF Precautions

Finally, MDF boards should ideally be cut outdoors or in a workshop with ventilation. This is because most MDF contains urea-formaldehyde, and some formaldehyde is released when MDF is cut.
