Hardwood Deckboards

Hardwood Deckboards

We are a Devon timber merchant with large decking stocks including hardwood,  composite, and softwood deck boards. Situated near the coast between Exeter and Plymouth we maintain considerable stocks of yellow balau decking products. The durability of Hardwood decking has an appeal, backed up by the traditional appearance of the product.

Hardwood Deckboards for a traditional appearance

Hardwood decking boards, machined from yellow balau, are kept in stock.  Our ex-150mm boards have either a smooth or castellated profile. When first laid these hardwood boards exhibit a range of light red-brown tones which mature into differing shades of grey.  If a more contemporary finish is preferred then the reddy/brown colours can be prolonged by using hardwood decking oils or stains.

Characteristics of hardwood decking

Because hardwood deckboards are air-dried and untreated there will be some colour variations between boards, applying deck oil will help to even out any colour differences.

Hardwood decking boards are spaced with narrow hardwood strips during the air-drying process. This means there might be light marks along the deckboards length.

The boards sometimes have some tiny pinhole marks in the timber face, this is perfectly normal and this “pinhole” feature is permissible within the product grade.

Another feature of the boards is their natural oil content. If you are laying boards near light-coloured gravel or slabs then you may have to check any water run-off. The water may become tainted with a tannin colour and accidentally stain other landscape items.
