Hardwood decking options

We are a Devon timber merchant with large decking stocks including hardwood, composite and softwood deck boards. Situated near the coast between Exeter and Plymouth we supply considerable stocks of decking products. Hardwood decking prices tend to appeal to customers with more traditional houses and rustic gardens.

Hardwood Deckboards for traditional properties

Hardwood deckboards, machined from yellow balau, are kept in stock.  These ex-150mm boards have either a smooth or castellated profile. When first laid these hardwood boards exhibit a range of light red-brown tones which mature into differing shades of grey.  They provide a vivid contrast to lush green Devon gardens.  If a more contemporary finish is preserved the colours can be prolonged with the use of hardwood decking oils or stains.

Characteristics of hardwood decking

Hardwood deckboards are air dried and untreated there will inevitably be some colour variations between boards.   Oiling will help to even out any colour differences which will eventually disappear if the boards are allowed to go grey.

Hardwood decking boards are rot and insect resistant. During the air drying process the boards are spaced with narrow hardwood strips which might show as lighter strips along the deckboards length.

The boards sometimes have some tiny pinhole marks in the timber face – this pinhole feature is permissible within the products grade.

Another feature of the boards is their natural oil content. If you are laying boards near light coloured gravel or slabs you will have to watch for colour leaching. Water run-off might become tinted with a tannin type colour and stain other landscape items.
