Workwear at Southern Timber
My favourite work clothing
Working outdoors can be demanding at the best of times – with the wrong clothing it can be a real chore. Wearing the right outdoor clothing helps to protect you from the elements, enhances safety and says something about you as a person or a business. We started stocking Herock Workwear in 2024 and have received some excellent feedback already.
Sound foundations
One of the core principles of outdoor clothing is layering which allows the adjustment of clothing based on the weather conditions and intensity of work
- The base layer is worn closest to the skin and is responsible for managing moisture.
- The mid-layer provides insulation and warmth, trapping body heat and providing warmth without being too bulky.
- The outer layer is the defence against wind, rain, and snow. Jackets and trousers made from waterproof, weatherproof, and breathable fabrics like Gore-Tex or other proprietary materials keep you dry while allowing sweat to escape.
The outer layer should also be durable enough to withstand the wear and tear of outdoor activities.
Choosing the Right Fabrics
The fabric choice for outdoor clothing plays a critical role in comfort, performance, and protection. Understanding the properties of different materials can help you make informed decisions.
Polyester and nylon are commonly used in both base and mid-layers. Synthetic materials dry quickly and are generally more affordable than natural fibres. While they may not have the natural warmth of wool, synthetic fabrics excel at moisture-wicking, making them great for active pursuits. View the Herock Holster Pocket Trousers here
Gore-Tex and other Waterproof/Breathable fabric for outer layers, High-performance materials like Gore-Tex are favoured for their ability to block out rain and wind while allowing sweat to escape. This balance of waterproofing and breathability is essential for staying comfortable in unpredictable weather.
Accessories for Extra Comfort and Protection
In addition to your core layers these accessories can provide added comfort, warmth, and protection.
Hats and Gloves - should protect your head and face from sun, rain, or cold. Protection from a wide-brimmed hat will help prevent headaches and sunburn. Beanies, balaclavas and gloves are great for warmth.
- Socks - never underestimate the importance of a good pair of socks. Merino wool or synthetic socks are ideal for moisture-wicking and warmth. Beware of cotton socks as they can trap moisture. Herock Ubin Socks offer a cocktails of cotton, polyester, polyamide o
We all have personal preferences, mine is to wear an older pair of shoes (or boots) for the journey to work. When arriving on site a pair of decent boots will keep the feet comfortable and supported on uneven ground.
Look for boots with good ankle support, a sturdy outsole for traction, and waterproofing for wet conditions. Needless to say for building indoors, or out, steel toe caps are a necessity, After a hard day at work I look forward to a comforting drive home and that comfort commences with a change of boots, dry and well fitting.
