Log storage in the garden

When the colder months close in, the need for dry logs for the fire, or log burner, increases. However, finding a good quality, reasonably priced log store may need a little effort. Outdoor log storage solutions are a fantastic way of keeping wood dry in wet weather, avoiding piles of wood building up inside the home and they'll ensure the garden is kept tidy, too.

 

Siting your log store

Try to avoid the temptation of putting your log storage into any old garden space. Investing in a good stock of seasoned, or unseasoned, logs suggests they deserve to be cared for. Outdoor log storage needs a bit of thought. Logs that are left in a pile can cause a trip hazard, stacked against a house wall means they might fall onto somebody in the garden.  The damp from the logs might also spoil the fabric of your walls.

Check the dynamics of your garden, you might decide that you need more than one log storage unit. Remember the log store needs to keep logs dry and needs to be robust enough to remain upright in strong winds. You might have to prepare a “base” for your log store – some weed fabric wouldn’t go amiss and/or a solid level of blocks or bearers to allow air circulation underneath

 

Choosing your log store

There's a wide variation when it comes to size and design. The smallest, and often cheapest, are typically a maximum of four feet tall and provide only one or two raised platforms for wood storage.  In comparison, the largest storage solutions will be wider, deeper and taller – nearly seven feet in some instances. Some log stores come with built-in shelves for kindling but they can be improvised if required.
