Balmoral Driveway Gates
Balmoral Driveway Gates
represent an impressive privacy gate. These Balmoral entrance gates can be made to size in either softwood or hardwood. The gate has a shaped top and can be specified with, or without, “horns”. There is also a similar gate design, the Windsor, which features a flat top to the Windsor Gate. This image is courtesy of First Class Builders Ltd
Joinery Quality Timber
The Balmoral driveway gates are made for us in the UK using kiln dried joinery quality Scandinavian redwood timber. A mixture of CNC machinery and a trained workforce combine to produce a quality product. Each gate is made using timber components produced from a cutting list and the CNC machine. These machined timbers are banded together and pressure treated with Tanalith-E wood preservative. This treatment helps protect the timber against decay and fungal attack. Tanalised timbers enjoy an increased service life when compared to products made with standard dip treatment. After drying each gate is then assembled and hand finished.
The top rail is made from 75mm x 200mm Scandinavian redwood. This generous sized timber allows the curve to be created in the top rail. This top rail is also rebated to receive the ex 19mm x 125mm TGV cladding which then sit snugly within this recess. The gate stiles and horizontal framing are ledge and brace construction using mortise and tenon joints. These stile and timbers are 75mm x 100mm. Balmoral gates over 1.2 metres (approx 4′) high normally have an extra horizontal brace across the back of the gate. This ex 50mm x 100mm bracing is then mortised into the framework.
Hardwood Option
Most of our Balmoral entrance gates are made using quality softwood. This is a Scandinavian redwood, the timber being treated with tanalith preservative. This helps produce a gate that can be stained and maintained for many years to come. However, the Balmoral driveway gates can also be made using hardwood. The species is normally Iroko but sometimes they are constructed from Sapele, both timber species are durable and stable. While Hardwood is a more expensive option the extra durability should provide a significantly longer service life. Other gate options include the Windsor
Sizes Available
Not all driveways are the same, so each Balmoral gate is made to order. When quoting for gates we need to know whether you require one leaf or two, plus whether they are to make a pair. Generally most gates are somewhere between 3′, 4’, 5’ and 6’ in height and width. Please phone for guide prices
Looking after your Gates
All Southern Timber softwood gates are pressure treated to help protect the timber against decay and fungal attack. This pressure treatment, Tanalith E, starts as a light green but changes to a light honey brown, then after 18-24 months to a grey colour which is perfectly normal.
We would strongly recommend applying extra protection and some colour by applying wood stain/preservatives Osmo, Liberon or Treatex. Osmo Wood Stain is available in a wide range of colours and will help repel rain water from penetrating through the gate surface. Osmo Country Colour looks more like a conventional paint finish but is microporous and allows the wood to breathe – it won’t bubble, blister or peel like a conventional paint finish.
