Composite decking has its own place in the decking market.   Sometimes softwood and hardwood deckboards are not suitable for some installations, maybe the boards are not durable enough or maybe there are stringent budget constraints.  You might have used softwood decking before and found that your garden was too damp an environment, the boards became slippery and didn’t last as long as anticipated.   While we have 15 Year Warranty Softwood, durable Hardwood and Millboard decking as options you might also want to consider our composite decking.

Composite Deck Maintenance

When the deck is finally installed remember to keep that decking looking good will need a little bit of maintenance. These composite deckboards are hard wearing and the composite materials used mean the boards should not rot, splinter or warp like traditional timber boards might.  Because these composite deckboards are made primarily from recycled hardwood fibres there will inevitably be some fading of colour over time. This will be more pronounced in areas exposed to prolonged direct sunlight.

To keep your investment looking good you will need a broom, hot soapy water and a wash down with clean water.

Keeping it clean

As a general rule prevention is better than cure. Best practice on all decking materials is very similar. The following list of “do-nots” is not fully exhaustive.

• Furniture and plant pots should be lifted, not dragged across the decking

When considering composite decking you will need some Composite Deck Accessories.  You will need to verify how it is going to be installed, or ask us for advice, before you place your order. While the composite installation is similar to that of softwood or hardwood decks there are a few steps unique to composite products.  Due to this reason a number of specialist trims and accessories have been developed to make installs quicker and neater to the eye.

Composite Deck Design

Your composite deck design will have to take several factors into account to make the deck function the way you want it to.  As always there will be some compromises.  If your deck sits more than 300mm above ground level you should seek advice from your local planning department regarding possible planning requirements.

Decking location

The location of your composite deck is most important, usually they are positioned as a transition area from indoors to outdoors. If this is the case then the colour of the deck will probably be significant.  While talking of colour please be aware that because this is a wood composite board there will be some mild colour fading of the boards. The sub-frame for the decking will have to be considered especially in areas such as stairs and access to indoors. The sub-frame structure options include composite joists, carcassing timber and Plaswood.

Millboard deckboards have always looked in a different league when it comes to aesthetics, but there again they are a top of the range product. With a little extra care on installation they can look even more 

Some notes on getting the look with Millboard decking

Because Millboard deck boards are designed to replicate natural products they are manufactured with secondary toning colours. This means there will inevitably  be some variance in colour tone within each board and therefore from board to board, this is perfectly normal. The consistency of colour may also vary slightly from batch to batch. It therefore makes sense to order all boards required in the one delivery. If this is not possible then try mixing the batches to blend the colours as much as possible. As with all things constantly exposed to ultra violet light and all weathers, colours will tone slightly in time, this is normal for decking. Upon receipt of your delivery
