We normally several different section sizes of "batten" in stock, the most popular being the 25 x 50mm variants. Other popular battens are the 19mm x 38mm and 25mm x 38mm.
For a roof with rafter centres up to 600mm then 25mm x 50mm battens should be used for natural and fibre cement slate, interlocking clay and concrete tiles. These may be Type A batten, 25 x 50, and the Type A BS8417 stamp confirms that the battens have been graded to this standard. Then comes the colour battens, the 25 x 50 (actual 25 x 48mm) , coloured battens (ours are usually yellow) signify that these battes have reached BS 5534 grade. Note that the colour of the batten is an indication of quality, but it is the individually stamped battens that confirm the grading. It is the Contractors responsibility to ensure that the battens selected match the requirements specified on the contractors materials listing.
Other cross sections include a smaller 19mm x 38mm, and 25mm x 38mm.
The 19mm x 38mm pressure treated battens have a variety of uses incuding fencing, garden structures and general construction. The 19x38 battens are sawn and pressure treated to UC2 to help protect against attack from insects wood rotting fungi. (see note below on pressure treatment.
Our next sized batten is 25mm x 38mm and is used for similar tasks as the 19mm x 38mm. It is also useful for creating level suraces when installing plywood, netamatch and plasterboard.
These timbers are all pressure treated with Tanalith E, or similar, timber preservative. It is important to the durability of the batten that any cross cuts are treated with two coats of end-grain treatment are applied. These timbers are tanalised for situations where the timber may be subjected to the occasional risk of wetting from rain. However, they are not intended for prolonged exposure to rain or stored (or used) in ground contact.
