Product Code:

LA_SL_SOFT_100_UC4

100 x 200mm Softwood Sleeper, UC4 Pressure Treated, 2.4m

Our European oak and softwood sleepers have always been popular. Now we have added UC4 Incised sleepers which are intended for use as garden retainers, horizontally or sometimes dug into the ground and used vertically. Other applications are for steps and increasingly for growing vegetables in garden raised beds. Oak and Softwood sleepers also kept in stock

UC4 sleepers can be used in ground contact.

The key to UC4 is that specialised incising machinery leads to deeper penetration for the preservative. Not only does this lead to a longer product service life but also our UC4 products can be used in ground contact for a guaranteed service life of 15 Years or more.

UC4 Incised Softwood Sleepers and appearance

Timber is a natural product and sleepers will vary in appearance. Fresher cut stock tends to be a pale green to soft russet tones, but as they start to weather the colours will become more muted and after a season or two will become slate grey in colour. This is perfectly natural.

Design considerations for steps

Incised sleepers are usually regular in appearance and make good looking, uniform appearing steps.  The incised sleepers have a more contemporary look. Oak sleepers will generally have one or more uneven faces and possibly some wane present. They are more suitable for rustic steps.

As the sleepers dry out they will start to exhibit end splits and the grain will open up a little. This happens whether you have oak, softwood or incised posts. If this is an aesthetic problem then you might have to use another timber board as an edging to cover the sleeper ends.

Retainers near light coloured shingle or render

Incised sleepers come into their own here.  because fresh cut oak contains a high proportion of water and tannin.  appearance is considered a feature, not a defect of the product Because oak leaks water some of the tannin will leach out of the oak sleeper as well. When assessing your design make sure you make allowance for this leaching, it will stain gravel, rendered walls, slabs and other light coloured materials.
