100 x 200mm Softwood Sleeper, Pressure Treated, 2.4m (FSC® Mix)

Softwood, UC4 Softwood and oak sleepers stocked

European oak and pressure treated softwood sleepers have always been popular sleeper choices. We don’s stock “Used” sleepers but have added UC4 Incised sleepers which can be used in ground contact.

Tanalised Softwood sleepers

Often used horizontally, or dug into the ground and used vertically.  Also used for garden steps, in rockeries and increasingly for growing vegetables in garden raised beds.  These sleepers have a lot of presence for their price, but their life is limited unless used  in conjunction with UC4 Incised sleepers.  The UC4 sleepers are formulated for use in ground contact, or the softwood sleepers can be used with one, or more, courses of blocks.

Pressure treated sleepers tend to appear pale green after treatment. However, as they start to weather the colours will become more muted and after a season or two will become grey in colour. This is perfectly natural and the timbers can be stained by the end-user if required.  Any cross cuts, or holes drilled during  installation should be treated with a recognised timber preservative. Ronseal end-grain protector is a popular choice, normal preservatives are not formulated to treat cross cuts.

The key to our UC4 sleepers is the specialised incising machinery that enables deeper penetration for the Tanalith preservative. Not only does this lead to a longer product service life but also these UC4 products can be used in ground contact for a guaranteed service life of 15 Years or more.

Design considerations

Softwood sleepers are usually regular in appearance and make good looking, uniform looking steps.  These sleepers have a more contemporary look which can be enhanced further with a black, grey or coloured stain.

As the sleepers dry out they will start to exhibit end splits and the grain will open up a little. This happens whether you have oak, softwood or incised posts. If this is an aesthetic problem then you might have to use another timber board as an edging to cover the sleeper ends.

Retained sleepers near light coloured shingle or render might occasionally leach pressure treatment onto other garden materials. It is possible that it might lightly stain gravel, rendered walls, slabs and other light-coloured products for a short time after delivery.
