Chestnut paling is a fencing product still in demand. It may be a niche market but this traditional looking product is eco-friendly.
The palings are made from coppiced chestnut - think oak when dealing with chestnut. Coppicing on this chestnut means that the cropping syscle is approx. 18 - 20 years. The pales are split for more strength than achieved by sawing through the timber. The pales look pale when first cut but will turn grey after a few months - this when they are at their hardest. The pales are joined with galvanised wire at between 75mm and 100mm intervals. Each pale is secured with two wires and becomes part of a readymade fence. This is an English grown product and supplied in 9.1 metre rolls, in Inperial size that is 10 yards..
The fence is normally supported with round posts at whatever spacing is appropriate. Post rammers would probably be the favoured method. Other things being equal a roll would probably equate to 6 posts with approximately 1.8 metre spacing. Ideal temporary fence, chestnut is very durable in wet, marshy conditions.
